The Grand Vin de Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the great classics of Saint-Julien and has been ranked as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé since the 1855 classification. The 2008 vintage beautifully showcases what Las Cases stands for: Cabernet-driven precision, enormous depth, and an aging potential that extends well over decades.
The 2008 vintage required patience in the Médoc. After a cool spring and a variable August, a dry September provided the decisive turnaround. Léoville Las Cases was able to harvest correspondingly late: the harvest took place only from October 6th to 18th. Yields were only around 38 hl/ha, and only slightly more than a third of production went into the Grand Vin—a correspondingly strict selection.
Terroir & Cuvée
The heart of the estate is the famous Grand Enclos de Léoville, situated directly on the border with Pauillac and near the Gironde. Deep gravel soils over gravelly-sandy and partially clayey subsoils offer ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. The influence of the nearby Gironde also ensures a more balanced microclimate.

The relatively high proportion of Cabernet Franc in particular lends the wine additional aromatic complexity and floral spice. With around 13.4% alcohol, the vintage possesses remarkable concentration without losing its classic orientation.
Character & Style
2008 is a classic, taut, and precise Léoville Las Cases. Dark currant, cassis, and black cherry meet graphite, cedarwood, tobacco, and a distinct mineral note. As bottle age increases, finer earthy, spicy, and slightly balsamic nuances develop.
On the palate, the wine remains dense and powerful, yet remarkably straightforward. Ripe, present tannins, vibrant acidity, and cool dark fruit provide tension. Particularly characteristic is the long, mineral-saline finish. Recent tastings still describe the 2008 as remarkably youthful and slowly maturing.
A great Bordeaux for lovers of the classic Left Bank: less focused on opulence and immediate sweetness, and more on structure, origin, and longevity. The 2008 is now beginning its first truly interesting drinking window, but with good storage, it still has reserves for many more years.
