The Ried Trenning is the highest-altitude site in the Spitzer Graben – around 550 meters above sea level. In this steep vineyard, the vines take root in an extraordinary soil profile of gneiss, graphite, and limestone. And as every wine lover knows: limestone is always good. We won't go into detail about pH levels and acid buffering here – but that is, among other things, exactly what it’s about, and you can taste it.
The Riesling from the Ried Trenning displays an intense spectrum of aromas: zesty citrus fruits, stone fruit, a hint of exoticism, accompanied by fresh herbs and flint. On the palate, mineral-saline components emerge, carried by a razor-sharp, precise phenolic structure. A Riesling with character, energy, and depth – a true one-of-a-kind in the Spitzer Graben.
Since 2021, the Grabenwerkstatt has no longer been a member of the Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus. Consequently, the designations Federspiel and Smaragd are missing from the labels. For the two winemakers, the focus today is on origin – the specific vineyard site; classifications based on must weight (potential alcohol) are becoming increasingly irrelevant due to climate change.
The 2021 vintage ranks among the strongest of the last decade. Robert Parker rated it with 97 points as the best Austrian wine of the vintage. However, we are not raising the price because of this – nor are we letting such numbers drive us crazy.
