The "Kalkofen" Riesling from Grabenwerkstatt is a bold, sublime representative of its variety – defined by juicy citrus fruits, floral nuances, and fine meadow herbs. The vines are deeply rooted in primary rock, which lends the wine its striking minerality and its precise, cool character. The vibrant acidity gives it backbone, while the taut structure ensures tension and length.
The Ried Kalkofen is one of the steepest and most difficult-to-cultivate vineyard sites in the Spitzer Graben – and at the same time, the warmest of the five Grabenwerkstatt sites. The sensory result is all the more impressive: a wine that, despite its warm exposure, shines with cool elegance and a clear focus.
In short: cool and bold.
Since 2021, Grabenwerkstatt is no longer a member of Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus; therefore, the categories Federspiel and Smaragd no longer appear on their labels. For the two winemakers, the focus is on the origin, the site itself – while classification by must weight is becoming increasingly irrelevant due to climate change.
The 2021 vintage is considered one of the best of the last decade in the Wachau and produced particularly clear, tension-filled Rieslings.
