The Ried Trenning is the highest-altitude vineyard in the Spitzer Graben – around 550 meters above sea level. In this steep vineyard, the vines are rooted in an extraordinary soil profile of gneiss, graphite, and limestone. And as every wine lover knows: limestone is always a good thing. We won’t go into detail about pH levels and acid buffering here – but that is, among other things, exactly what it’s about, and you can taste it.
The Riesling from Ried Trenning displays an intense spectrum of aromas: zesty citrus fruits, stone fruit, a hint of exoticism, along with fresh herbs and flint. On the palate, mineral and saline components emerge, carried by a razor-sharp, precise phenolic structure. A Riesling with character, energy, and depth – truly unique in the Spitzer Graben.
Since 2021, the Grabenwerkstatt has no longer been a member of the Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus. Consequently, the terms Federspiel and Smaragd are absent from the labels. For the two winemakers, the focus today is on origin – the specific vineyard site; classifications based on must weight (potential alcohol) are becoming increasingly irrelevant due to climate change.
The 2021 vintage is considered one of the strongest of the last decade. Robert Parker rated it 97 points, naming it the best Austrian wine of the vintage. However, we are not raising the price because of this – nor are we letting such numbers drive us crazy.
