The “Kalkofen” Riesling from Grabenwerkstatt is a bold, sublime representative of its variety – characterized by juicy citrus fruits, floral nuances, and fine meadow herbs. The vines take deep root in the primary rock, which gives the wine its striking minerality and its precise, cool character. The vibrant acidity provides backbone, while the taut structure ensures tension and length.
The Ried Kalkofen is one of the steepest and most difficult sites to cultivate in the Spitzer Graben – and at the same time the warmest of the five Grabenwerkstatt vineyards. The sensory result is all the more impressive: a wine that, despite its warm exposure, shines with cool elegance and a clear line.
In short: cool and bold.
Since 2021, Grabenwerkstatt has no longer been a member of the Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus; therefore, the Federspiel and Smaragd categories no longer appear on their labels. For the two winemakers, the focus is on the origin, the site itself – while classification by must weight is becoming increasingly irrelevant due to climate change.
The 2021 vintage is considered one of the best of the last decade in the Wachau and produced particularly clear, tension-filled Rieslings.
