The 2022 Ried Goldberg Blaufränkisch ranks among the great red wines from Georg Prieler. The Goldberg is considered one of the most significant vineyard sites in Schützen am Gebirge and was first mentioned in documents as early as 1555. Unlike many sites on the Leithaberg, it is characterized not by limestone, but by mica schist with clayey loam. Located on the side facing away from Lake Neusiedl, it is also influenced by cool air currents from the north – a dynamic contrast to the rapidly warming schist soil.
The vines were planted in 1972 by Georg Prieler’s father. After hand-harvesting, the Blaufränkisch is fermented in open vats, the cap is punched down by hand, and it is then left on the skins for three weeks. This is followed by 26 months of aging in large wooden barrels.
The 2022 vintage combines the typical power of the Goldberg with remarkable elegance. Heart cherry, red forest berries, and fine herbal spice meet floral and mineral nuances. Juicy and precise on the palate, with fresh acidity, fine-grained tannin, and a long, mineral finish. Despite its depth, the wine never feels heavy – rather, it showcases that combination of energy, clarity, and finesse for which great Blaufränkisch can stand. Falstaff awarded the 2022 vintage 97 points and attests to its further development potential.
