The domaine wines from the great master of the northern Rhône are considered the most puristic Syrahs and the clearest expressions of their terroir. The granite-rich soils in Tain-l'Hermitage (where the famous hill towers above) and in St. Joseph (on the side where the Jean-Louis Chave family has been cultivating vines since 1481) are predestined for Syrah, and paired with Chave's experience, know-how, and skill, the result is a unique magnificence. Cool finesse paired with fine tannins, muscular without being opulent, straightforward yet full of character, playful with rustic corners yet polished edges. The wines of J. L.
