The “Kalkofen” Riesling from Grabenwerkstatt is a bold, sublime representative of its variety – characterized by juicy citrus fruits, floral nuances, and fine meadow herbs. The vines are deeply rooted in primary rock, which gives the wine its striking minerality and its precise, cool character. The vibrant acidity provides backbone, while the taut structure ensures tension and length.
The Ried Kalkofen is among the steepest and most difficult-to-cultivate sites in the Spitzer Graben – and simultaneously the warmest of the five Grabenwerkstatt vineyards. All the more impressive is the sensory result: a wine that, despite the warm exposure, shines with cool elegance and a clear line.
In short: cool and bold.
Since 2021, Grabenwerkstatt has no longer been a member of the Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus; therefore, the categories Federspiel and Smaragd no longer appear on their labels. For the two winemakers, the origin, the site itself, is the focal point – while classification by must weight is becoming increasingly irrelevant due to climate change.
