Pira - Barolo DOCG Vignarionda 2020

The Vignarionda vineyard is arguably THE Grand Cru of the Barolo region. Few wineries own a few rows there and are permitted to work with this site. Alongside Giacomo Conterno and Angelo Gaja, our winemaker Giovanni Rosso also cultivates this prime parcel. At Pira, it is the only vineyard he does not age traditionally, but rather in barriques. The grape material is so rich in extracts that it is not overpowered by the wood. After 12 months in barrique, the wine is transferred to large Slavonian oak barrels. The usual bottle aging completes the process until the wine lands in our glass. Typically, such a wine should be left to rest in your home cellar for at least 5 years—10 would be even better—but today's world is impatient and fast-paced. We know this issue all too well. The Vignarionda is an intensely fragrant wine with a complex palette of aromas featuring light and dark forest berries, cherry, violets, and wood. The earthy notes are typical of Barolo, and the salinity is characteristic of the Serralunga terroir. The tannins are upfront and still a bit angular in their youth. Nevertheless, they are tightly structured and signify the quality of this wine.
