The trend toward more conscious consumption is also reflected in the world of wine: low- and no-alcohol wines are becoming increasingly important – both in everyday life and in fine dining. But what lies behind these products, which are often more than just mere alternatives?
Reduced-alcohol (low alcohol) and non-alcoholic (no alcohol) wines are generally based on traditionally vinified wines from which the alcohol is partially or completely removed using technical processes such as vacuum distillation, reverse osmosis, or spinning cone column. The goal is to maintain a delicate balance: the removal of alcohol must not destroy the wine's aromatics, structure, and balance – a major challenge for producers.
Especially in recent years, quality and style have improved enormously. Modern non-alcoholic wines now display astonishing freshness, fruit, and complexity – whether as a sparkling wine, a fragrant white wine, or an elegant rosé. Low-alcohol wines – usually with 6–9% vol. – are often created through deliberate harvest timing, the choice of different grape varieties, or new fermentation techniques. They offer a more moderate alcohol content while retaining sensory depth.
