A novelty is the Airén variety, found almost exclusively here, which was long the most widely planted variety in the world. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAirén originates largely from La Mancha and is\/was used as a base wine for brandy. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRioja alone is larger than Austria and provides top-class wines from indigenous grape varieties with a healthy dose of oak. The Gran Reservas are somewhat out of fashion, and Ribera del Duero, with its somewhat shier barrique and \"fruit-forward style,\" has built up a large fan base. The appellation has only existed for a good 40 years.
