Okay, the few other Hornsteins also caused some confusion, and after Simon has turned heads in recent years as a \"shooting star\" from Lake Constance, it is understandable that there is a need for clarity regarding which \"magician from Lake Constance\" is being referred to. (Note: This term was incidentally used for a \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.vinum.eu\/de\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Vinum\" rel=\"noopener\"\u003eVinum\u003c\/a\u003e cover on which Simon was also featured). When one follows the philosophy of origin and terroir, the name change is even more understandable. The best site in Nonnenhorn is the Seehalde, and the Hornstein family owns a large part of it and has the privilege of working with this valuable piece of land. Domaine Romanée-Conti did something similar back in the day, naming itself after the best site in the village. The only difference is that Romanée-Conti is a monopole site and the wines are a bit more expensive than those from the Seehalde Grand Cru; the rest is actually the same. The focus is on terroir and cool climate. Another main emphasis is on the natural cultivation of Pinot varieties. In terms of taste, the goal is to highlight the regional origin of the wines, which results from the environment experienced by the vine and the course of the year. The best proof of this is the white village wine, which this year was vinified as a cuvée of Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc. The grape varieties fade into the background, and the stage is cleared for the character of Nonnenhorn. But what is this character, and what makes these sites unique? Fundamentally, they produce taut, elegant, racy, straight-structured, and cool wines with mineral undertones and Burgundian nuances. These factors continue to be built upon as work progresses toward even greater individuality.
